DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS by Eugene O’Neill

19 January 2017- 09 April 2017 Eighty years after the first performance, the masterpiece of Eugene O’Neill was staged at the Central Stage of the National Theatre!

Eighty years after the first performance, the masterpiece of Eugene O’Neill “Desire under the Elms”, was staged at the Central Stage of the National Theater, in translation of Giorgos Depastas and direction of Antonis Antipas. Eleni Karaindrou composed the music of the performance.

The work was published and first presented to the audience in 1924, in an effort of O’Neill to reform the American Theater. He was deeply affected by August Strindberg and the ancient Greek tragedy and composed a contemporary poetic drama – an adaptation of Euripides’ Hippolytus – where Phaedra falls in love with the son of her husband Theseus.

The performance was presented from 19/01/2017 to 09/04/2017.

Leading actors: Giorgos Christodoulou, Giorgos Kentros, Maria Kitsou, Nikos Gialelis, Panagiotis Panagopoulos and the violinist Kostas Lolos.

Audience Reviews:

  • Very strong and well-played show! Christodoulou, Kitsos and Kentros, in the leading roles, gave pain!  Very nice music and scenery, too!
